Rating: eight/10

In February of 2020, Mythic Quest's first episode dropped on Apple Television receiver+. A few months later, I found myself turning to streaming services that weren't Netflix or Hulu. Even so, finding fresh fare during the pandemic proved tricky. Not just considering streamers were generally eking out content slowly — or delaying shows and movies altogether — merely also because starting something new felt daunting.

Some days, getting caught upwards in a new world feels exciting. But, like many other Telly marathoners, I constitute myself rewatching "comfort shows" last summer. Familiar characters, stories, worlds and jokes provided some kind of certainty at a time that felt defined by the unknown. But fifty-fifty that chicken-soup-predictability of comedies by wore thin. Then, in the all-out egg warfare that led up to "Bunny 24-hour interval," even Animal Crossing: New Horizons started to feel like work — non escapism.

Luckily, my Apple TV+ subscription — which, originally, I'd caved to purchasing for the sake of Dickinsonand The Servant— was nonetheless alive and well. Apple'south streamer emphasizes quality over quantity. And Mythic Questis nevertheless another testify that illustrates this somewhat-novel streaming wars game plan. In fact, the show'due south nearly-perfect blend of sharp (yet oddball) comedy and sudden poignancy makes this hidden gem smoothen brighter than most. Like that friend y'all've just met, but feel yous've known for years.

Then, What'due south "Mythic Quest" Most?

Co-created by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia alum Charlie Mean solar day, Megan Ganz (also Customs), and Rob McElhenney, Mythic Quest — subtitled Raven's Banquet in season 1 — is a workplace comedy that follows the exploits of a video game studio that produces an immensely pop massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), as well called Mythic Quest, or MQ for brusque.

With a bandage and crew made upward of familiar faces from both It's Always Sunny and Customs, you know off the bat — or shovel — that you lot're in proficient easily. The MQ office is led past McElhenney's Ian Grimm (pronounced much like the German language word "Ein"), a creative managing director who is both the knuckle ring-wearing self-captivated dude yous expect — and likewise someone with a surprising amount of warmth and (at times) perceptiveness.

Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (Rob McElhenney) try out a new work dynamic (to decidedly mixed results) in the mannerly, laugh-out-loud second flavour of "Mythic Quest" on Apple TV+. Photograph Courtesy: Apple TV+

In many means, Ian's character hits the same remainder the whole prove strives for: it's express joy-out-loud funny; incredibly sharp; searing in its satirical criticisms of the video game industry; full of heart that feels like a real gut-punch when information technology sneaks upwards on you; then much more.

But permit's get back to this stacked cast. Mostly, Ian is going head-to-head with MQ's lead engineer Poppy Li (breakout star Charlotte Nicdao). (Generally, the two have different priorities and dissimilar visions for the game's Raven'south Banquet expansion.) The MQsquad also features Customs'southward Danny Pudi every bit Brad Bakshi, the blunt, snarky head of monetization; David Hornsby (It'southward Always Sunny) as push-over executive producer David Brittlesbee; Jessie Ennis as David'due south often-scary and out-for-blood flavour one assistant Jo; Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus) every bit Nebula Award-winning head writer C.Westward. Longbottom; and Ashly Burch and Imani Hakim equally game testers (and budding couple) Rachel and Dana.

Rounding out the studio are recurring characters Sue Gorgon (Caitlin McGee), the overworked community manager, and Carol (Broad City'due south Naomi Ekperigin), the 60 minutes head who's constantly pulled into everyone'south personal lives.

Every bit mentioned before, there'southward a lot to love about Mythic Quest. Too its connections to classics similar Community and It's Always Sunny, two specifics convinced me to hit play on the pilot. For starters, as a gamer I was drawn to the workplace backdrop — the in-jokes and dash.

Relatedly, I've been a longtime admirer of Ashly Burch, the voice behind characters from stellar games like Life Is Strange and Horizon Zero Dawn, but, perhaps more formatively, one one-half of the duo behind the sketch-comedy web serial Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'? (HAWP). In their web serial, siblings Ash and Anthony Burch (Borderlands 2) use surreal sense of humour to examine video games' themes and industry trends. And if HAWP was any indication of the incisive satire Burch would bring to the Mythic Quest author'south room (and to her grapheme, Rachel), I was sold.

While my excitement around video game-axial content pulled me into Mythic Questinitially, I'd still pitch information technology to not-gamers and coincidental fans as well. The series never gets bogged down in industry minutia or technical jargon — even Nicdao noted that she wasn't a gamer earlier acting in season i, simply feels that the show transcends its setting and is "about a dysfunctional found family" (via Uproxx). It's safe to say that much of the show's appeal comes from its universality, and non in a cheesy way either.

"We never want to exist the kind of bear witness that's, similar, moralistically wagging our finger at the audience," Nicdao told Uproxx in an interview. Simply, in the same breath, Nicdao points to a flavor-2 scene wherein Ian and Poppy treat the art department terribly, noting that the audition isn't supposed to be on the stars' side.

Whether Mythic Quest's insightful social commentary is shedding a light on industry issues, like crunch and burnout; or illustrating how women, people of colour, and queer folks accept to navigate the workplace, it does and then with a real honesty. In fact, Mythic Quest's inclusivity feels as natural as its comedy. You tin tell that the show was made past — and for — people who might see themselves reflected in the characters on screen. And, in terms of TV representation, that makes a world of difference.

As Nicdao pointed out, the evidence centers on a type of chosen family, and peradventure nada illustrates that notion better than the testify'southward "Quarantine" episode, which hit Apple TV+ on the heels of the season one finale. Unlike well-nigh every other quarantine special episode that came out last year, Mythic Quest's bonus episode actually succeeded. Filmed from its cast members' homes, the episode, which featured a remote Rube Goldberg automobile, proved to exist a stunning technological feat.

Just underneath all the Zoom jokes and work-from-home sense of humour was one of Idiot box'south virtually touching explorations of the profound sense of isolation 2020 created — as well as our need for warm moments and human connexion. Information technology's a gut-dial that sneaks upwards on you lot, merely in a way that's both delightfully surprising and perfectly inevitable.

"Everybody has that game that they barbarous in love with because they make an impact," Ian says (albeit for selfish reasons) in flavour one. "Those games were somebody's legacy." With season ii's starting time few episodes under its belt, Mythic Questhas started to cement its own legacy as themust-scout workplace comedy.

Flavour one, plus 2 bonus episodes, are streaming now on AppleTV+. New episodes from Mythic Quest's second seasondrop on Apple tree Telly+ every Friday, from May 7 through June 25, 2021.
